I work on the development of the engine’s different plain bearings, which is very exciting as our work is on the cutting edge within the area. One of my tasks is to carry out bearing calculations on our new engines. The work involves close cooperation with the other groups in the department. In addition to this I help provide advice and other types of technical assistance to the other departments. I primarily work with in-house software in the ongoing projects that I am a part of. My department consists of approx. 40 employees – and there is a good mix of people with different professional competencies, which provides good dynamics. But overall the department is made up of mechanical engineers and in general the department possesses high levels of competence. For example, a quarter of the employees in my department have a PhD. I have noticed that the company puts a lot of effort into retaining its competencies – the employees – by ensuring that they are happy at work and develop in different directions. In this way MAN Diesel & Turbo’s position is that its employees are the company’s most important resource. And the employees can sense this as many of them stay on here for years.

I applied to MAN Diesel & Turbo to meet new challenges and I had not worked on engine design previously. Plus the chance to work with specialists was attractive and I was also attracted by the fact that it was a large, international company. I commute from Malmo in Sweden every day and I find that I get on really well with my Danish and foreign colleagues. We cooperate really well and the fact that I live in Sweden is not a barrier. I also meet my colleagues sometimes at the weekly Friday bar, which takes place in MAN Diesel & Turbo’s "Medarbejderhuset", and we have a really good time.

The knowledge that I can develop on a purely professional level as there are plenty of opportunities for developing existing and new professional competencies. My view is also that you have the opportunity of influencing your own development within the company. Furthermore, there is a terrific professionalism in our work with design, as things really must be up to scratch. Getting out of the office and visiting our production sites, where we get an insight into the im-pressive engines that we help to design, is very interesting. Here we can see the fruit of our work. So even though I have a great deal of focus on design and the technical in my day-to-day work, coming out and seeing the finished products afterwards gives that little bit extra.
